Mitch and I took advantage of the football game against UCONN being on Labor Day weekend and made a trip to New York City out of it! We've been wanting to go since we moved to the east coast, but it's not exactly an easy or cheap trip. We made it our 3rd anniversary celebration and our last vacation before the baby comes!
We stayed with Andrew and Hannah Belnap, some friends Mitch did the Jr Core with at BYU. They love in Harlem, and that made us nervous when we found out! But it was actually very safe. One night we passed a group of people loudly arguing about something. And as we passed by we realized they were yelling about whether they liked clams or muscles! Andrew said that was exactly how their neighborhood is!
It was a busy busy and very HOT (for me!!) weekend. Needless to say my hands and feet and ankles were swollen the entire weekend!
On Saturday we drove into the city and took our stuff to the Belnap's tiny NYC apartment. They went sight seeing with us the rest of the day. They took us to a little pizza place for lunch and it was delicious and perfect New York pizza! Then we headed to the Statue of Liberty. We didn't get tickets to go up to the crown because they were sold out until November 6th! It's probably a good thing because I don't know if I could have made it up the steps in the heat. But we did get tickets to see Liberty Island and Ellis Island. We had to wait forever to go through the airport style security, but it was really fun to take the ferry and see everything.
Our ticket also included the audio tours so we did the one at Ellis
Island, which was very interesting. Unfortunately most of the artifacts
that they have were not on display because superstorm Sandy damaged the
climate control system and they were still trying to fix everything.
I'm not sure why I'm making that face, but I was trying to show my belly!
When we got done at the Statue of Liberty we were close to the financial district so we decided to check it out. Mitch thought it was cool to see the bull and wall street.
We ended the day with a delicious Thai dinner! It was such a fun first day in NYC!
